Now and again, there’s usually a major security scare for computer users everywhere. While many of them are by and large snuffed out, some are so large in scale that it’s impossible for everyone to guard themselves against the virus in time, with millions leaving it too late becoming vulnerable to infection almost instantly.
This infographic about the Top 5 Viruses reveals how some of the biggest computer viruses of all time managed to spread in such a short space of time and infect hundreds of thousands of machines. What all five computer viruses have in common is that they’re all at least a decade old, suggesting that many of us have wised up in terms of keeping ourselves safe online.
In terms of expense, all cost several billion dollars to clean up after, although the rate at which they spread varied greatly. Slammer, for example, infected just 200,000, a pittance compared to the three million affected by MyDoom back in 2004.
