December 13, 2014 by Abhinaya Prabhu

Micromax that announced its Yu brand of smartphones that runs on Cyanogen operating system. Now, the leading India based vendor has started sending media invites for an event that is slated to happen on December 18. It is expected that the manufacturer will be announcing the first Cyanogen based smartphone of the Yu brand at the event.

Unfortunately, the Micromax invite does not reveal anything regarding the smartphone and there are no details known about the innards of the Yu series smartphone as well. However, there are leaks circulating all over the internet suggesting that the first Yu brand smartphone will be equipped with a 64 bit processor and run on CyanogenMod OS. Now, we know that the handset will be launched in the country on December 18, though we expect its availability to happen in two to three weeks after the launch.

The new Yu brand was announced back in November and Micromax partnered with Cyanogen Inc for this initiative. In order to garner the attention of everyone, Micromax came up with innovative promotional activities. Lately, it announced the Apps for YU challenge inviting the Indian developers to build applications for the upcoming Yu brand of smartphones that are based on Cyanogen OS based on Android.

Furthermore, the manufacturer announced that the best application will be featured on the new Yu brand smartphone that will be launched by Micromax and the developer who wins will be rewarded with Rs 1,00,000 cash prize. The firm also claimed that the top three entries will get Yu smartphones and the top ten developers will get the Yu merchandise.

Besides partnering with Cyanogen Inc to launch the Yu brand of smartphones, Micromax also pulled the software firm to sign an exclusive deal with it. Eventually, Micromax will have the sole rights to rollout Cyanogen updates in India and hence, the OnePlus One smartphones sold in India will not receive OTA updates for Cyanogen OS.
