MWC 2015: Microsoft Lumia 640 Announced

March 3, 2015 by Sarvesh Darak

At MWC  this year Microsoft has announced another mid-range phone in Barcelona, Spain. In order to gain subsequent market share and provide value for money smartphones Microsoft has launched Lumia 640. Windows phone is all about optimization on low end hardware and Lumia 640 is no different. In a generation where the smartphones are sporting high end hardware and top class specifications, Microsoft decided to go with the mid-range phone aimed at budget segment.

Windows phones are ideally optimized to run on low end hardware and in this context Lumia 640 is no different. Sporting a big 5.0 inch HD display with screen resolution of 720 X 1280 pixels this phone offers a screen density of 294 pixels per inch which is not o enthralling but considering a mid-ranger these specifications are pretty neat.

Packing an older Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocking at 1.2 GHz and 1 GB of Ram this phone offers nothing new as we have seen the similar specifications many times earlier. But again considering a windows based smartphone it will offer ptretty fast multitasking and eventually a nice gaming experience over all. Microsoft Lumia 640 offers a built-in storage of 8 GB which can be further expanded to 128 GB.

Lumia 640 packs a 8 MP rear snapper and 0.9 MP front snapper in an age where smartphones are boasting of up to 13 MP rear and front cameras. So it is quite disappointing to see such average features. Many other budget smartphones offer better specifications and better camera quality than this one. Lumia 640 runs on windows 8.1 OS and draws power from a 2500 mAh battery unit. It will provide a descent battery back considering the lower screen resolution and lower processing power.

Connectivity features include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and micro USB. It lacks Wi-Fi direct, DLNA and NFC to count a few. Over all this is not an impressive smartphone but taking into consideration that windows phones are quite popular in India so it might be a delight for all the Window phone out there. Microsoft has already confirmed that it will be getting windows 10 update so it will be a nice bargain after all.
